Gold Star Memorial Dedication

About Gold Star Families

Gold Star Families is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals who have lost loved ones while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The organization’s mission centers on offering honor, hope, and healing by remembering fallen heroes and fostering a sense of community among those affected. The name “Gold Star” originates from the tradition in which families displayed a service flag in their window, with each star representing a family member in the Armed Forces. Blue Stars signified living service members, while a Gold Star indicated someone who had died in service to the country. National Garden Club member clubs collaborate with Gold Star Families to pay tribute to these heroes through the installation of Gold Star Markers, as noted by the National Garden Clubs (NGC).

Branson’s Gold Star Memorial Project

The Shepherd of the Hills Garden Club dedicated over a year of effort, working alongside the Veterans Memorial Garden volunteers, to raise funds and facilitate the receipt and installation of Branson’s only Gold Star Memorial. This meaningful tribute was placed at the Veterans Memorial Garden in a location of honor. Notably, this Memorial is one of just twelve Gold Star Memorials in the State of Missouri.

The Dedication Ceremony

On October 8, 2025, over 75 people gathered for a profoundly moving Dedication Ceremony. The Branson Veterans of America 913 began the event by Posting the Colors. The ceremony featured a keynote address from Robert Wake of the Wake Foundation, a twice-decorated Purple Heart recipient, who shared his personal experiences in combat and his journey of recovery from injuries sustained in service.

Honoring Fallen Heroes

Jack Herschend, representing Herschend Family Entertainment and one of the original founders of the Veterans Memorial Garden, placed a Memorial Wreath at the site, signifying respect and remembrance for the fallen.

Guests and Participants

The ceremony was attended by many prominent members of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, including President Tanya Stanley, Vice President Diane Neterer, and other Garden Club members from across the state. Samantha Revel, a Gold Star family member, was also present to honor the occasion.

Ceremony Conclusion

The event concluded with a moment of silence, followed by a Rifle Volley, then Taps performed by Retired Sgt Bob Smithers of the West Point Army Band. These solemn tributes deeply moved the attendees, many of whom were brought to tears. Sincere gratitude is extended to all who contributed to making the Dedication Ceremony a meaningful and memorable event.
